Creativity

Science defines creativity as any idea that may be good, novel and useful. “Pooling from this wealth of knowledge we store in our brains and making connections between different ideas, we have to solve a new problem, or create, write a new novel — that’s what science looks at when we study ‘creativity.’ Farnworth, D. (2016). This definition captures creativity in a way that allows it to be accessed by anyone in society should they chose to harness it for their own work. Professor Richard Foster at Yale University looks at creativity in yet another way. He sees it as “the ability to find associations between different fields of knowledge, especially ones that appear radically different at first. The process is iterative rather than linear and requires people with curiosity, energy, and the openness to see connections where others cannot.” Foster, R. (2015).

Again, I’m wondering about the subtle connection and similarities between my definition of Innovation and that of creativity. Creativity IS teachable and often it is the harnessing of ideas that have come before us in other peoples’ experiences and translations. Another theme that is emerging here is the idea of people working collaboratively to address problems and, based on information and past data, making meaning for their context.
