Isn't it funny how moments sometimes seem serendipitous? This course opened with us being asked to respond with historical thinking. Being a Social Studies teacher, this idea is right out of our playbook! It was very interesting and gave me insight into applying theory that we ask students to apply to our study of social studies in the province of Alberta. The other moment that seemed "aligned with the stars" was the fact that we are now leading a group of colleagues through a shift in teaching and learning that will hopefully translate into more of a digital response to learning and one that will give the students the opportunity to have experiences in education that their parents will look at in baffled amazement- only in that "it's not the way that they did school". How would I begin to describe INNOVATION at the beginning of this course? Innovation is knowing that there are multiple routes to the final destination and choosing to design experiences that give all learners opportunities to "show what they know" in new and exciting ways. Innovation is change. Innovation is existing in an uncomfortable state and learning new things. Innovation can be easy, it can be hard....but it's a given in teaching and learning if you want to make the best impact.
