The Changing Landscape of Learning

The landscape of learning has been transformed in this age of digital media and connectivity. We are in a 24-7 environment that allows people to access information when they want it, and this has turned the concept of time and space as a traditional “brick and mortar” concept into a fluid concept that continues to emerge. This has brought up new problems of the ill-structured nature which requires us to seek out solutions that are in a way infinite. We may never actually find solutions as much as we find timely solutions only to be thrust into a new trajectory of problems that need solving. According to this article, On-line technologies require organizations to be in touch with the motivational, cognitive, and behavior attributes of participants (students, staff, workers) to have this type of learning environment to work for everyone. At the heart of this article, is the root concept of self-regulated learning. I like how the author is supportive of the idea that strengthening self-regulation is a skill that essentially has the power to improve a variety of skills in the workplace. Note that the article reported through research based foundations, that self-efficacy, intrinsic goal setting, orientation, help-seeking, and time and environment management played a role in the success of online learning success. Let’s be honest, this seems to relate back to the idea of metacognition. For me, I continue to wonder about the power of metacognition and how we get all to recognize the essential value of it.
