Reading about the pedagogy behind the PL3P makes great sense. In a short explanation, PL3P is an approach that Columbia Dental Residents are using to develop personalized plans, construct their own knowledge and be active learners. This is using the concept of metacognition (thinking about how we think) that is necessary in learning. As they move through their residence experience, it appears as though active learners will digitally document, connect to academia, self-assess and reflect...all of the conditions that are so fundamental for learning experiences. Of course, this appears bundled within the SRL idea of phases (Forethought, Performance, and Self-Reflection). The program appears to look at reflection through the lens of the mirror (self-reflection), the microscope (make small experiences large) and the Binoculars (the distant becomes closer). This would be transferable to my high school teens as we need to see self, short term and long term for a bigger vision. The literature states that creating a learning experience within this type of framework will not only allow residents to become more participatory in their learning but to ensure that this type of environment moves with them as they become working professionals.
